De Engelse taal brengt leerlingen vaak in verwarring als het gaat om ruimtelijke relaties. Woorden als inen aanlijken eenvoudig, maar het gebruik ervan is sterk afhankelijk van de context.
Als we zeggen dat iets in is, bedoelen we meestal dat het binnen grenzen is. Een boek zit bijvoorbeeld in een tas. Omgekeerd, als iets aanstaat, impliceert dit contact met een oppervlak. Er staat een kopje op tafel.
Veel niet-moedertaalsprekers worstelen met dit onderscheid. Ze vragen zich misschien af: zit de kat in de bak of op de bak? Het antwoord hangt volledig af van de vraag of de kat zich in de container bevindt of erop rust.
