About the project
Arolsen Archives is an international center for the study of persecution during the period of National Socialism. In fact, it is the world's largest repository of documents about the victims and survivors of that era. The organization positions itself not just as an archive, but as an active participant in the preservation of memory and the defense of democratic values.
The story begins after World War II, when the Allies faced a huge humanitarian challenge. In 1948, the International Tracing Service was created, which later became what we see today. Now the institution operates under a new name - Arolsen Archives International Center on Nazi Persecution, although legally the old status of ITS has been preserved due to international agreements.
The collection of materials is recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. This makes it a unique resource for a society where every year tens of thousands of people from all over the world seek help in finding out the fate of their relatives or studying history.

The center’s activities are based on several key vectors that are closely intertwined:
- Search work. The archive helps survivors and their relatives search for traces of missing loved ones free of charge. This includes former concentration camp prisoners, forced laborers and stateless persons (Displaced Persons) after 1945.
- Digitalization. The organization is actively moving its funds online. Access to the archive is open to everyone via the Internet, which allows research to be conducted remotely.
- Education and memory. There are special programs for schools and universities. For example, the StolenMemory project is an international exhibition that has already visited Poland and Ukraine. There are also promotions like everynamecounts dedicated to memorial dates.
- Research. Reports, reports and materials for scientists are published. The center collects news, press releases and stories to maintain community interest in the topic.
