Intellectual competitions "Competition": an educational project for schoolchildren in Belarus and the world

Bakonkurs.by is the official website of the public association “Intellectual Competitions COMPETITION”, which is the largest educational project in the Republic of Belarus aimed at developing the cognitive potential of youth.

About the project

The public association "Intellectual competitions "COMPETITION"" has been operating for more than 28 years. The organization continues its activities under a new name - NGO "Intellectual Competitions "Konkurs", which indicates stability and long-term mission. The main goal of the association is to popularize knowledge among schoolchildren in the field of exact, natural and human sciences.

The project is being implemented through a series of intellectual games-competitions, which are held annually throughout the country and abroad. Participation is available not only to Belarusian but also to foreign students who can take part on the website belcontest.by.

Competitions and their scale

The bakonkurs.by platform presents 12 main intellectual competitions, each of which is focused on different age groups and subject areas:

• Kangaroo - international mathematical competition;
• Buslik - competition in biology;
• Zubrenok - for lovers of nature and ecology;
• Crane - in Russian;
• Bee - on the surrounding world and basic knowledge;
• Linguist - for the development of linguistic skills;
• Infomouse - in computer science and IT;
• Belka - by geography;
• Globe - on geography and the world;
• Tit - on literature and culture;
• Olympian - Olympic format in various sciences;
• Centaur - for middle and high school students;
• Orionchik - an intellectual competition for primary schoolchildren.

More than 400,000 students from 2624 educational institutions in Belarus take part in competitions every year. More than 950,000 books are awarded as prizes, making the project one of the largest in the field of distance education and erudition development.

Features of participation and organizational work

Participation in competitions is possible both in person and online. This requires registration on the site. The platform offers:

• online competitions;
• correspondence school to prepare for competitions;
• event calendar with up-to-date information about dates;
• instructions for filling out participant cards and distributing prizes;

The project also actively works with teachers: it provides information on the procedure for transferring contributions, codes of educational institutions, as well as recommendations for summing up results.

Prizes and publications

The winners receive not only diplomas, but also valuable gifts - books that make up a significant part of the educational library. Among the most popular publications:

• “The land is strong with its people: a collection of puzzles” (for the winners of “Centaur”)
