About the project

BestOldGames. ru is an archive that began to take shape long before the term PC became familiar. The history of the collection goes back to Soviet times, when a team of enthusiasts from Tula was recording games for the ZX Spectrum. They equipped dorm rooms as a workshop and distributed sound from the Pentagon-128 to twenty tape recorders at once. These tapes became the first stage in the accumulation of digital heritage.

Currently the database includes 400 floppy disks with games for the Spectrum. Later, in the mid-90s, the collection moved to the DOS platform. At the same time, a 386 computer was purchased, which was originally planned for work, but quickly turned into a gaming machine. By the end of the decade, the number of disks exceeded a thousand. With the advent of Windows 3.11, interest in PC games temporarily faded due to the crude system, and the team switched to selling consoles and cartridges. But after 2000, a wave of games for personal computers began again, many of which were licensed.

The project has a complex history of content transfer. The old site was created in 2002 on free hosting Narod, but after the sale of hosting to third parties, all efforts to preserve the materials were nullified. Now the administration is engaged in a slow restoration: articles are pulled from backup copies and transferred to the new platform.

This is not a quick process, but the goal is to delight users with old, but truly better games with detailed walkthroughs. The content is formed based on the personal experience of collectors who have played hundreds of games themselves, from classic shooters like Doom to complex strategies.
