DRI Wiki is a resource dedicated to Direct Rendering Infrastructure (DRI). It is essentially a wiki platform for the community of developers working on the open source OpenGL implementation and Mesa 3D drivers. The project exists as a repository of documentation that has not yet been migrated to new systems, but still contains critical architectural information.
The site describes DRI as a framework that allows applications to directly access graphics hardware running the X Window System. The main goal here is to ensure the safety and efficiency of this process. The infrastructure includes changes to the X server itself, client libraries, and the Linux kernel (via DRM - Direct Rendering Manager).
Central to the project is the creation of fast hardware-accelerated OpenGL implementations for Mesa. Without DRI, such problems would be solved much more slowly or would require proprietary solutions from vendors.
Developers have created several drivers that comply with the DRI specification. Among them are solutions for chipsets from:
All these components are combined into a single ecosystem, where the documentation is constantly updated, although some of the materials are still on this page awaiting migration.
The structure of the resource is aimed at a technical audience. There is no marketing here, only dry facts and working tools. Navigation is built around specific sections:
Particular attention is paid to community support through the AuthorshipAndAcknowledgements and ToDo sections. The last content edit was recorded on October 21, 2020, which indicates that the project lives on its own schedule, and not in real time.
The site texts provided do not contain direct contacts, email addresses or telephone numbers. Communication with the project is carried out through standard wiki editing mechanisms (sections AuthorshipAndAcknowledgements) and public discussions within the Mesa development community.
This is a framework for direct access to graphics hardware under the X Window System. It changes the X server, client libraries, and kernel (DRM) to provide secure OpenGL acceleration.
Drivers are written for hardware from 3DFX, AMD (formerly ATI), Intel and Matrox.
The main documentation is in the new location, but this wiki contains older material that has not yet been moved there.
For this, there is a special section TestingAndDebugging with tips for testing and debugging.
