About the project

REEEC at Illinois is a center for Russian, Asian and Eurasian studies at the University of Illinois. The project positions itself as a resource for expanding knowledge about Russia, the countries of Eastern and Central Europe, the Balkans, the Caucasus and Central Asia. This is not just an information portal, but a full-fledged academic structure that unites students, teachers and researchers.

The Center has been designated a National Resource Center through its funding through the Title VI program of the U.S. Department of Education. Such support allows for the implementation of large-scale educational programs and the provision of FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) scholarships for studying the languages ​​of the region.

Main directions

The center’s activities cover several key areas:

• Educational programs. Both bachelor's and master's courses are presented here. Particular attention is paid to interdisciplinary approaches: from history and political science to linguistics and library science. For example, there is a double degree M.A. REEESM. S. LIS, aimed at information and librarianship professionals.
• Language and cultural studies. The Center actively develops the study of specific cultures. A pilot program in Bulgarian studies, sponsored by the Republic of Bulgaria, was recently announced, which includes courses in language, culture and history, as well as opportunities to study in Bulgaria.
• Academic courses. The website contains descriptions of specialized items. These include an Introduction to Bulgarian Culture, the South Caucasus: Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia from an Anthropological Perspective, as well as in-depth seminars on modern autocracy, privilege in the Russian Empire, and Polish culture.
• Research support. The Center organizes work with visiting scholars (Visiting Scholars), supports FLAS fellows, and coordinates Ukrainian research efforts through a special committee created jointly with the Department of Slavic Studies.
