Site rhc1887. ruis dedicated to the history and activities of the Russian Hunting Club - a society of hunting enthusiasts that functioned in Moscow from 1887 to 1917. The project preserves the memory of one of the most significant elite associations of that time, the founder of which was the famous zoologist and naturalist Leonid Pavlovich Sabaneev.
The initiative to create the club grew out of serious problems identified at the end of the 19th century. In 1876, under the leadership of Sabaneev, the Imperial Hunting Society conducted a large-scale study that showed a sharp decline in the number of game animals. The main reason for this phenomenon was the uncontrolled increase in the number of predators that destroyed useful game. The club was created as a response to these challenges, uniting people interested in nature conservation and the development of hunting.
The activities of the club and, accordingly, the content of the site cover several key aspects of the hunting culture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries:
The resource works as a digital archive. It does not offer modern booking or ticketing services, but rather documents heritage. Particular attention is paid to events that were held with the support of the club or in its spirit:
It is interesting that the club was located first on Tverskaya Street, and from 1892 on Vozdvizhenka, house 6, in the city estate of Count Sheremetev. This place became a center of attraction for the nobility and experts in hunting.
Sabaneev’s educational mission deserves special mention. He not only collected trophies, but also studied nature. The site has sections dedicated to the Russian greyhound, horses, weapons and even game dishes, highlighting the club's holistic approach to lifestyle.
The founder of the society was Leonid Pavlovich Sabaneev (1844-1898) - a Russian zoologist, naturalist and descendant of a noble family. He graduated from the Faculty of Science at Moscow University and devoted his life to the study of hunting and fishing.
The club's charter was approved on June 12, 1887, and the opening itself took place on January 4 (16), 1888. Initially, the club was located on Tverskaya Street, and in 1892 it moved to Vozdvizhenka, building 6.
The club supported the magazine Nature and Hunting and the weekly Hunting newspaper. They published reports, practical notes on gun and hound hunting, information about new weapons and issues of keeping animals.
The goal was to provide club members and their families with the opportunity to spend their free time with benefit and pleasure, exploring nature. This also included combating the decline in game numbers due to rising predator populations.
