Style Manualis the official standard for writing and editing texts for government agencies in Australia. The resource is designed for anyone who creates, reviews, or approves content on behalf of the government. The main goal of the project is to ensure clarity and consistency of materials so that they meet the needs of users.

The site acts as the main directory. It combines formatting rules, grammar, and information design guidelines. Access to materials is open to a wide range of specialists working with government communications.

Main directions

The structure of the portal is logical and divided into key blocks covering all aspects of content creation:

• Accessible and inclusive content. Particular attention is paid to equal access to information. This section provides guidance on accessibility principles, sensitivity (how people read), and the use of inclusive language.
• Writing and design. Here are tips for creating clear and easy-to-find texts. Important topics include user research, writing style, and security and document classification issues.
• Grammar and punctuation. This is a set of definitive rules of the Australian style. The section details types of words, parts of sentences, punctuation marks, spelling, use of numbers, italics, names and titles.
• Content types. The guide helps you choose the right format for the user's task: blogs, letters, forms, images, PDF files, reports, social networks or videos.
• Structuring. Instructions for navigating and understanding the material through headings, links, lists, tables and text blocks.
• Citation. Rules for attribution of sources, including the author-date method, documentary-remarkable style and work with legal materials.

Site Features

The project is updated regularly. The portal has a blog where news and explanations are published. For example, in March 2025, an article on dangling modifiers was published, and earlier, in November 2024, Minister Patrick Gorman introduced a guide to government writing.

There is a clear division into four types of users for whom the content of the guide is tailored. Additional resources are also available: short guides, training and professional development.
