About the Tarkhany Museum-Reserve - the place where Lermontov’s soul remained forever

Here, behind the calm steppes of the Penza region, the noise of city streets is almost inaudible. But if you look closely, you can hear the echo of poetry. The State Lermontov Museum-Reserve Tarkhany is not just a house with a stone facade and centuries-old trees. This is a place where every step is filled with the spirit of Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov. Here he lived, here he wrote, here he conceived his lines, which still touch the hearts of millions.

Why here? Because in these parts he felt at home. Family, nature, ordinary people - all this became a source of inspiration for him. The estate, surrounded by ponds and a park, seemed to have slowed down time. Here he spent most of his life - from childhood to adolescence. Yes, yes, it was here that the foundations of the worldview of the brilliant poet were laid. His love for the Motherland, for the people, for history - it all began right here, among the meadows and groves.

The museum-reserve protects not only artifacts, but also the atmosphere itself. The poet found his last refuge inside the tomb chapel. This place cannot be called simply historical - it is alive. It breathes. And when you enter there, even the most indifferent person can feel something strange. Something deep. It’s as if Lermontov’s words still ring in the air.

What you can see and how to spend the day

Every year thousands of people come here to venerate the memory of the genius. Some people just want to take a walk in the park, others want to try to feel the same as the poet. And there are those who come for exhibitions. For example, the recent exhibition Pets of Russian Parnassus is about Semyon Raich, the man who taught Tyutchev and Lermontov. Interesting? Certainly. But this is just one of dozens of interesting projects.

There are moments that cannot be described. Holidays, promotions, quizzes - all this is part of the Living Museum program. The museum does not stand still. He lives. He is changing. It evokes emotions. On August 25, 2025, an environmental flash mob from volunteers from Moscow took place here. This is the second time in a row that they have come to help. Why? Don't know. Maybe because they feel connected to the place where poetry was born.

The All-Russian Lermontov Festival is also held here. One of the main events of the year. And every year people from different parts of the country gather here to read poetry, argue, laugh and cry. It's like becoming children again. It's like going back to a time when words mattered.
