One of the most interesting and long-lived projects in the world of school mathematics is the Tournament of Cities. It has existed for more than four decades, since 1980, and during this time it has become a real symbol of deep work on problems, and not just a fight for prizes.

What is the Tournament of Cities?
The International Olympiad in Mathematics for schoolchildren called the Tournament of Cities is a unique event that is held annually. Main idea? Not sporting success, but developing the ability to do research. Yes, that's right. The tasks are designed for students of grade 811, but anyone who wants can try even higher if they feel strong.
Every year there are two tours: autumn and spring. And each tour is divided into two options - basic and complex. The basic one is a little easier, but still requires a serious approach. But the difficult one is already the level of the All-Russian or International Olympiad. It is difficult to compare it with something else, because it is special in itself.
Participation in one round does not interfere with participation in another. There are no restrictions. You can do only one option, you can do all four. The main thing is the results. The three best solutions to the problems are counted. And if they are high enough, the winner’s diploma is given automatically.
Where is the Tournament taking place?
One of the most important facts is geography. The tournament operates in more than one hundred cities in twenty-five countries. Europe, Asia, South and North America, Australia, New Zealand - all this is part of one large network. Any locality can become a participant if they want to organize a tour in their city.
In Moscow, by the way, the situation is somewhat different. Only the autumn tour is held here. Why? Because the spring difficult version coincides in time with the Moscow Mathematical Olympiad. This is not an accident - it happened historically. After all, the Tournament was originally conceived as an expansion of the Moscow Olympiad to other regions.
It is interesting that the final oral round is only for 11th graders. Whoever received the winner's diploma in 10th grade - in the fall or spring - has a chance to try himself in this final stage. Even if he did not manage to go through all the previous circles, there is still an opportunity to enter the main arena.

News are constantly updated on the site.For example, on August 12, 2025, the 37th Summer Conference ended in Dubna. In January 2025, certificates and diplomas of the 46th Tournament could be received in person at the Center for Practical Training (Mozhaisky Lane, 4), from 2 to 6 p.m. on weekdays. And the electronic version is already in the participant’s personal account.
The exact dates of the tours are also indicated: in the fall - October 6 and October 20; in spring - March 2 and March 16. These dates are important. Participants must schedule their time in advance. It is especially important to understand that there is no spring tour in Moscow - you need to know this in advance.

Any student can participate. You don’t have to be a high school student - younger ones can go for the difficult option if they feel strong. Conversely, seniors can choose Basic to test their knowledge without pressure. The main thing is to do quality work, and not just solve problems for the sake of results.
