When you think about global food security and sustainable agricultural development, the first thing that comes to mind is one of the most significant international bodies that has been working on these issues for many years. We are talking about FAO, or UN FAO. This is not just a website, it is an entire platform where data, success stories, research and real support from countries around the world are collected.

What is FAO and why is it needed?

FAO is an organization that guards food stability. It helps countries address hunger, poverty and environmental crises related to land, water and food production. The platform actively works with governments, local communities, NGOs and even fishermen - because every element of the system is important.

On the site you can find a huge amount of information: from the annual food price index to detailed studies on the condition of soil and water resources. For example,FAOSTATis a free food and agriculture database for more than 245 countries. It's all here, from 1961 to the last available year. It is very convenient when you want to understand how the situation in a particular country has changed over half a century.

Stories that move the world

It's not just numbers and graphs here. There are living examples from people's lives. How farmers in Madagascar gained land ownership through title certification - and now their lives have changed dramatically. Or how the people of Mauritania, faced with the expansion of the Sahara Desert, are restoring fertile land with the help of the FAO program Against Desertification.

There is a video where they talk about how one man named Teslim grows vegetables, fruits and even raises chickens in conditions of extreme drought. This is not a hypothesis, but real actions. And also podcasts telling about nomadic pastoralists who preserve generational knowledge about vegetation and climate.

What else can you find?

• Globally Important Agricultural Systems (GIAHS)are places where people have maintained unique farming practices for hundreds of years.
• Director General- His messages, especially after the ceremonies in Rome, often contain calls to action on behalf of the UN.
• SDGs- all 17 sustainable development goals. The FAO shows exactly how it works on each of them, from tackling inequality to protecting the oceans.
• Interactive dashboards- updated information on budget, programs and people within the organization. Very transparent.

Does it seem strange that such a large site can be so accessible to the average user? But no - everything is simple and clear. There are no complicated terms without explanation.There are simple stories, clear graphics, live information. And yes, they support multiple languages: English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Arabic, Russian. This is important because not every person speaks English.

What about the data?

The one that stands out is the Food Price Index. It tracks changes in food costs from 2014 to 2026. You can see how the price fluctuated - it jumped up and then fell. The jumps in 2023-2024 are especially noticeable. I wonder why? Maybe due to climate change or logistical problems? The site has analytics that help you figure it out.

There are also projects related to cities. For example, in Dakar, women are participating in microgardens to combat food shortages following mass migration from villages. This is not a theory - these are real solutions that already work.

In general, FAO is not just a website. This is a living system that is making a real difference in the lives of people around the world. And although the text does not contain phone numbers or email, this does not mean that it is impossible to contact. They just want the information to be open, transparent and understandable to everyone.

I wonder how such a huge organization works without constant hassle? Maybe because it is built on cooperation, trust and real action.And not just in beautiful words.

After all, if everything were perfect, we would already live in a world without hunger. But not yet. But we have FAO. And that's already something.
