• https://api.whatsapp.com/send?text=*Back%20to%20Ireland%20by%20Moira%20O’Neill*nI%20have%20resided%20overseas%20for%20an%20extensive%20period%20of%20time,%20yet%20I%20remain%20engaged%20in%20the%20sporting%20events%20and%20current%20affairs%20transpiring%20in%20Ireland.%20Yesterday,%20in%20the%20rugby%20world%20cup%20quarter-final%20hosted%20in%20France,%20Ireland%20narrowly%20fell%20short%20against%20New%20Zealand.%20The%20outcome%20was%20agonisingly%20close.%20Despite%20Ireland’s%20position%20as%20the%20top-ranked%20team%20globally,%20the%20recurring%20narrative%20persisted.%20This%20marks%20the%20eighth%20consecutive%20world%20cup%20quarter-final%20defeat%20for%20Ireland.%20Today,%20the%20newspapers%20extensively%20covered%20the%20match%20and%20its%20aftermath.%20One%20publication%20aptly%20encapsulated%20the%20sentiment%20with%20the%20phrase,%20“if%20not%20now,%20when.”%20Anyways,%20it%20is%20good%20to%20be%20back%20online. %20With%20a%20new%20laptop%20this%20week,%20the%20world%20is%20my%20lobster. %20In%20thinking%20of%20the%20emerald%20isle%20this%20weekend,%20I%20was%20reminded%20of%20Moira%20O’Neill’s%20poem, %20Back%20to%20Ireland.%20Moira%20O’Neill%20was%20the%20pen%20name%20of%20Agnes%20Shakespeare%20Higginson%20(1864-1955),%20a%20renowned%20poet%20of%20Irish-Canadian%20origin.%20Her%20works%20primarily%20consisted%20of%20ballads%20and%20other%20forms%20of%20verse%20that%20were%20inspired%20by%20the%20scenic%20beauty%20of%20County%20Antrim,%20where%20she%20resided%20in%20the%20town%20of%20Cushendun.%20That%20beautiful%20north%20coast%20brings%20back%20so%20many%20memories.%20Included%20is%20an%20old%20image%20of%20the%20poet,%20cleaned%20up,%20enhanced%20and%20coloured.%20Back%20to%20Ireland%20Oh,%20tell%20me,%20will%20I%20ever%20get%20to%20Ireland%20again,%20Achray%20–%20from%20the%20far%20North-West?%20Have%20we%20given%20all%20the%20rainbows,%20an’%20the%20green%20woods%20an’%20rain,%20For%20the%20suns%20an’%20the%20snows%20o’%20the%20West?%20“Them%20that%20goes%20to%20Ireland%20must%20thravel%20night%20an’%20day,%20An’%20them%20that%20goes%20to%20Ireland%20must%20sail%20across%20the%20say:%20For%20the%20len’th%20of%20here%20to%20Ireland%20is%20half%20the%20world%20away%20–%20An’%20you’ll%20lave%20your%20heart%20behind%20you%20in%20the%20West.%20Set%20your%20face%20for%20Ireland,%20Kiss%20your%20friends%20in%20Ireland,%20But%20lave%20your%20heart%20behind%20you%20in%20the%20West.”%20On%20a%20fine%20an’%20shiny%20mornin’%20the%20ship%20she%20comes%20to%20land,%20Early,%20oh,%20early%20in%20the%20mornin’,%20The%20silver%20wathers%20o’%20the%20Foyle%20go%20slidin’%20to%20the%20strand,%20Whisperin’%20“Ye’re%20welcome%20in%20the%20mornin’.”%20There’s%20darkness%20on%20the%20holy%20hills%20I%20know%20are%20close%20aroun’,%20But%20the%20stars%20are%20shinin’%20up%20the%20sky,%20the%20stars%20are%20shinin’%20down;%20They%20make%20a%20golden%20cross%20above,%20they%20make%20a%20golden%20crown,%20An’%20meself%20could%20tell%20ye%20why,%20–%20in%20the%20mornin’,%20Sure%20an’%20this%20is%20Ireland,%20Thank%20God%20for%20Ireland!%20I’m%20coming%20back%20to%20Ireland%20in%20the%20morning’.%20 %20 nhttps://www.oneirishrover.com/back-to-ireland-by-moira-oneill/

https://api.whatsapp.com/send?text=*Faces%20of%20the%20Somme,%201st%20July%201916*nThe%20Somme%20offensive%20in%201916%20was%20one%20of%20the%20biggest%20and%20bloodiest%20battles%20of%20the%20First%20World%20War.%20With%20well%20over%20one%20million%20casualties%20and%20300,000%20fatalities,%20the%20five-month%20battle%20finally%20came%20to%20an%20end%20on%20the%2018th%20November,%201916.%20Although%20casualties%20were%20high%20on%20all%20sides,%20the%20battle%20is%20most%20prominently%20remembered%20in%20Britain,%20Ireland,%20and%20across%20the%20Commonwealth,%20as%20an%20example%20of%20the%20ultimate%20sacrifice%20made%20by%20the%20men%20who%20served%20throughout%20the%20First%20World%20War.%20On%20the%20opening%20day%20of%20the%20offensive,%201st%20July%201916,%20the%20British%20Army%20suffered%2057,000%20casualties.%20Those%20first%2024%20hours%20of%20the%20Battle%20of%20the%20Somme%20were%20the%20darkest%20in%20it’s%20history.%20No%20other%20day%20came%20anywhere%20close%20to%20that%20infamous%20day.%20On%201st%20July%201916,%20nearly%20one%20in%20ten%20of%20the%2057,000%20casualties%20were%20from%20the%20North%20of%20Ireland.%20In%20comparison%20to%20the%20rest%20of%20Britain,%20Ulster%20had%20a%20relatively%20small%20population,%20so%20these%20losses%20had%20a%20particularly%20devastating%20impact%20on%20local%20communities.%20Virtually%20no%20town%20or%20village%20was%20left%20unscathed. %20Michael%20MacDonagh,%20in%20his%201917%20book,%20“The%20Irish%20on%20the%20Somme”%20refers%20to%20the%20aftermath%20of%20this%201st%20July%20slaughter.%20%5Bsu_quote%5DOne%20of%20the%20most%20striking%20and%20impressive%20tributes%20ever%20paid%20to%20the%20heroic%20dead,%20was%20that%20of%20Belfast%20on%20the%2012th%20of%20July,%201916,%20in%20memory%20of%20the%20men%20of%20the%20Ulster%20Division%20who%20fell%20on%20the%20opening%20day%20of%20that%20month%20in%20the%20great%20British%20offensive%20on%20the%20Somme.%20For%20five%20minutes,%20following%20the%20hour%20of%20noon,%20all%20work%20and%20movement,%20business%20and%20household,%20were%20entirely%20suspended.%20In%20the%20flax%20mills,%20the%20linen%20factories,%20the%20shipyards,%20the%20munition%20workshops,%20men%20and%20women%20paused%20in%20their%20labours.%20All%20machinery%20was%20stopped,%20and%20the%20huge%20hammers%20became%20silent.%20In%20shop%20and%20office%20business%20ceased;%20at%20home%20the%20housewife%20interrupted%20her%20round%20of%20duties;%20in%20the%20streets%20traffic%20was%20brought%20to%20a%20halt,%20on%20the%20local%20railways%20the%20running%20trains%20pulled%20up.%20The%20whole%20population%20stood%20still,%20and%20in%20deep%20silence,%20with%20bowed%20heads%20but%20with%20uplifted%20hearts,%20turned%20their%20thoughts%20to%20the%20valleys%20and%20slopes%20of%20Picardy,%20where%20on%20July%201%20the%20young%20men%20of%20Ulster,%20the%20pride%20and%20flower%20of%20the%20province,%20gave%20their%20lives%5B/su_quote%5D%20The%20author%20went%20on%20to%20reference%20the%20heavy%20cost,%20paid%20locally,%20on%20that%20opening%20day%20of%20July.  %20%5Bsu_quote%5DThere%20was%20cause%20for%20bitter%20grief%20as%20well%20as%20the%20thrill%20of%20pride%20in%20Ulster.%20Nothing%20has%20brought%20home%20more%20poignantly%20to%20the%20inhabitants%20of%20a%20small%20area%20of%20the%20kingdom,%20the%20grim%20sacrifices,%20and%20the%20unutterable%20pathos%20of%20the%20war,%20than%20the%20many%20pages%20of%20names%20and%20addresses%20of%20the%20dead%20and%20wounded%20—%20relatives,%20friends%20and%20acquaintances%20—%20which%20appeared%20in%20the%20Belfast%20newspapers%20for%20days%20before%20“The%20Twelfth”%20and%20after.%20So%20blinds%20were%20drawn%20in%20business%20and%20private%20houses;%20flags%20were%20flown%20at%20half-mast;%20and%20bells%20were%20mournfully%20tolling%20for%20Ulster’s%20irremediable%20losses%20when,%20at%20the%20stroke%20of%20twelve%20o’clock,%20traffic%20came%20instantaneously%20to%20a%20stand-still,%20and%20for%20five%20minutes%20the%20citizens%20solemnly%20stood%20with%20bared%20heads,%20in%20the%20teeming%20rain,%20thinking%20of%20the%20gallant%20dead,%20the%20darkened%20homes,%20and%20the%20inconsolable%20mothers%20and%20wives.%5B/su_quote%5D%20%5Bsu_box%20title=”A%20Tribute%20to%20the%20Fallen”%5DI%20apologise%20for%20not%20being%20around%20much%20online%20these%20past%20few%20months.%20Emails%20and%20messages%20have%20not%20been%20checked%20or%20responded%20to. %20I%20have%20spent%20the%20majority%20of%20this%20year%20working%20offline%20on%20an%20older%20computer%20because%20my%20main%20laptop’s%20monitor%20has%20been%20having%20problems%20with%20crazy%20colors%20appearing%20when%20it%20gets%20warm.%20But%20taking%20a%20break%20from%20the%20internet%20has%20been%20beneficial.%20It%20is%20to%20be%20recommended.%20In%20the%20recent%20months,%20I%20have%20also%20taken%20in%20two%20families%20of%20abandoned%20kittens.%20They%20simply%20required%20hugs%20and%20love.%20I%20call%20the%20two%20new%20families%20the%20“snowmen”%20and%20the%20“adorables.”%20They%20bring%20lots%20of%20happiness%20to%20the%20house%20(as%20well%20as%20sliced%20and%20diced%20curtains).%20Okay,%20I%20will%20try%20to%20respond%20to%20all%20of%20your%20messages%20in%20the%20coming%20weeks.%20Please%20write%20again%20if%20I%20happen%20to%20miss%20your%20message.%20Okay,%20on%20to%20the%20article.%20This%20article%20was%20written%20over%20the%20course%20of%2014%20months.%20It%20is%20my%20largest%20piece%20of%20work%20to%20date.%20Initially,%20I%20only%20intended%20to%20write%20a%20post%20on%20Robert%20McDonald%20of%20nearby%20Tyanee%20(his%20wife%20and%20son%20are%20buried%20in%20our%20churchyard%20at%20Innisrush),%20but%20as%20the%20project%20grew,%20it%20eventually%20encompassed%20the%20entire%20North.%20I%20was%20able%20to%20find%20pictures%20of%2073%20soldiers,%20who%20are%20included.%20The%20photo%20editing%20process%20was%20the%20key%20to%20adding%20value%20to%20the%20project.%20The%20initial%20images%20were%20usually%20tiny%20thumbnails,%20usually%20from%20old%20newspapers,%20and%20nearly%20always%20of%20poor%20quality.%20In%20cleaning%20them%20up,%20which%20was%20a%20time%20consuming%20process,%20they%20were%20enlarged%20to%20typically%201200%20by%20800%20pixels.%20In%20working%20with%20the%20initial%2073%20images,%20I%20ended%20up%20creating%20nearly%202000%20enhanced%20versions%20(i.e.%20various%20works-in-progress).%20It%20was%20a%20slow%20process.%20Here,%20in%20what%20are%20hopefully%20their%20best-ever%20visual%20representations,%20are%20just%20a%20few%20of%20the%20locals%20who%20died%20on%20the%201st%20July%201916%20at%20the%20Somme. %20Where%20possible,%20I%20have%20also%20added%20their%20signatures.%20This%20essay%20was%20a%20labour%20of%20love,%20written%20as%20a%20tribute%20to%20everyone%20who%20gave%20their%20all%20on%20that%20horrific%20day.%20Please%20note,%20this%20is%20an%20ongoing%20project%20that%20is%20being%20developed%20and%20expanded.%20If%20you%20can%20add%20to%20it,%20please%20do%20get%20in%20touch.%5B/su_box%5D%20In%20my%20local%20graveyard,%20at%20Innisrush,%20Robert%20McDonald%20of%20Tyanee%20is%20referenced%20on%20his%20widow’s%20gravestone.%20Robert%20was%20killed%20at%20the%20Somme%20on%20the%201st%20July%201916.%20A%20mile%20or%20so%20away,%20William%20Brown,%20from%20near%20Portglenone,%20also%20lost%20his%20life%20that%20day.%20He%20was%20killed%20while%20bravely%20trying%20to%20save%20the%20life%20of%20a%20wounded%20colleague. %20Why%20was%20his%20heroism%20never%20referenced%20in%20a%20local%20school%20curriculum?%20A%20few%20miles%20further,%20at%20Kilrea%20and%20Cullybackey,%20there%20were%20more%20local%20victims%20of%20that%20opening%20day%20at%20the%20Somme.%20Beyond%20Kilrea,%20a%20fatally%20wounded%20Samuel%20McElfatrick%20lay%20down%20in%20a%20shell-hole%20to%20die.%20An%20explosion%20had%20blown%20off%20both%20his%20legs.%20The%20courageous%20man,%20originally%20from%20Tamlaght%20(not%20far%20from%20our%20house),%20sized%20up%20his%20plight,%20got%20his%20pipe%20out,%20lit%20it,%20and%20prepared%20to%20die.%20Another%20local%20soldier,%20Bobby%20Letters%20from%20Cullybackey,%20in%20a%20letter%20home%20from%20the%20front,%20recalled%20the%20heavy%20fighting%20leading%20up%20to%20the%201st%20July:%20%5Bsu_quote%5DI%20lived%20under%20a%20bombardment%20from%20the%2024th%20June%20until%20the%203rd%20July%20when%20we%20were%20relieved.%20You%20will%20be%20glad%20to%20know%20that%20I%20and%20a%20chum%20captured%2015%20Germans%20ourselves%20–%20two%20in%20one%20of%20their%20own%20dug-outs.%20I%20brought%20them%20out%20at%20the%20point%20of%20the%20bayonet%20and%20ran%20them%20across%20‘no%20man’s%20land’%20into%20our%20lines.%20When%20I%20was%20going%20across%20with%20them%20a%20German%20machine%20gun%20opened%20fire%20on%20us%20and%20a%20bullet%20from%20it%20struck%20my%20rifle%20and%20smashed%20it.%20I%20have%20the%20bullet%20as%20a%20souvenir%20and%20also%20a%20German%20cap%20and%20pipe%20and%20a%20small%20book%20which%20one%20of%20the%20prisoners%20gave%20to%20me.%20I%20will%20try%20and%20send%20them%20home%20soon%20as%20a%20memento%20of%20the%201st%20July.%20I%20have%20to%20mourn%20for%20a%20few%20of%20my%20comrades.%5B/su_quote%5D%20Source:%20Ballymena%20Observer%20Andrew%20Millar,%20also%20from%20Cullybackey,%20had%20just%20joined%20up,%20when%20he%20was%20wounded%20on%20the%201st%20July%201916.%20Rifleman%20Robert%20Connaughty%20from%20Garvaghy,%20near%20Portglenone,%20served%20with%20the%2011th%20Royal%20Irish%20Rifles,%20and%20was%20almost%20buried%20alive%20when%20a%20German%20shell%20exploded%20that%20day. %20The%20shell%20killed%20several%20of%20his%20colleagues.%20By%20the%205th%20July,%20some%20four%20days%20later,%20he%20was%20diagnosed%20as%20suffering%20from%20shell-shock. %20He%20was%20wounded,%20a%20gunshot%20wound%20to%20face,%20in%201918,%20but%20survived%20the%20war.%20In%20order%20to%20make%20navigation%20easier,%20please%20find%20below,%20links%20to%20all%2073%20soldiers%20on%20 https://api.whatsapp.com/send?text=*The%20Moneymore%20Ghost*nMoneymore%20is%20a%20village%20of%20some%201900%20people,%20situated%20in%20County%20Londonderry.%20The%20plantation%20village%20was%20built%20by%20the%20Drapers’%20Company%20of%20London,%20who%20also%20had%20land%20in%20nearby%20Draperstown%20(hence%20the%20name%20‘Draperstown’).%20The%20word%20Moneymore%20comes%20from%20the%20Irish%20‘Muine%20Mór’%20and%20means%20a%20large%20thicket%20or%20large%20hill.%20A%20century%20ago,%20four%20to%20five%20hundred%20people%20lived%20there.%20My%20maternal%20grandmother%20lived%20about%20a%20mile%20outside%20Moneymore,%20at%20Carrydarragh. %20My%20earliest%20memories%20involve%20my%20parents%20and%20myself%20going%20up%20to%20granny’s%20house%20every%20Sunday,%20for%20lunch. %20She%20was%20a%20lovely%20lady. %20These%20regular%20weekly%20visits%20went%20on%20until%20my%20maternal%20grandfather’s%20passing,%20in%20September%201974. %20It’s%20a%20beautiful%20village.%20It%20was%20a%20lovely%20moment%20in%20time. %20After%201974,%20I%20was%20rarely%20ever%20again%20in%20Moneymore.%20Before%20Christmas,%20I%20came%20across%20an%20old%20scary%20newspaper%20story%20about%20strange%20goings-on,%20in%20Moneymore,%20in%20early%201893.%20There%20were%20several%20other%20local%20ghostly%20stories%20around%20this%20same%20time.%20The%20Tyrone%20Courier,%20from%20Saturday%2011th%20February%201893,%20tells%20the%20Moneymore%20story%20best.%20On%20Saturday%20night%20last%20(4th%20February%201893),%20about%208.15pm,%20Mr.%20Lapping,%20an%20Army%20pensioner,%20reported%20to%20Sergeant%20Bell%20at%20his%20barrack,%20that%20some%20persons%20were%20knocking%20at%20the%20door%20giving%20great%20annoyance.%20The%20sergeant,%20at%20the%20time,%20was%20proceeding%20to%20the%20country,%20called%20by%20the%20place,%20and%20saw%20nothing%20wrong,%20but%20left%20word%20with%20the%20guard%20to%20inform%20the%20men%20on%20duty%20in%20the%20village%20of%20the%20occurrence,%20with%20instructions%20to%20look%20after%20the%20affair.%20The%20two%20men%20on%20town%20duty,%20on%20being%20informed,%20hid%20themselves%20in%20front%20of%20Mr.%20Lapping’s,%20having%20a%20full%20view%20of%20the%20house.%20After%20some%2020%20minutes,%20waiting%20in%20ambush,%20the%20door%20was%20opened%20and%20Mrs%20Lapping%20came%20out.%20The%20police%20asked,%20“was%20there%20any%20noise%20since?”%20Mrs%20Lapping,%20said%20“the%20door%20was%20just%20knocked%20now,”%20and%20the%20police%20said,%20“that%20cannot%20be,%20we%20have%20been%20here%20for%20the%20last%2020%20minutes%20and%20no-one%20went%20to%20the%20door.” %20They%20left,%20and%20after%20a%20little%20while,%20the%20two%20policemen%20positioned%20themselves%20again,%20this%20time%20a%20little%20nearer%20the%20house,%20to%20watch%20the%20door.%20Nobody%20would%20be%20able%20to%20approach%20the%20house,%20without%20the%20police%20seeing%20them.%20They%20were%20not%20long%20there,%20when%20Constable%20Burns%20heard%20the%20door%20getting%20three%20knocks,%20Constable%20Orange%20then%20came%20up,%20and%20both%20went%20towards%20the%20house.%20Mrs%20Lapping%20opened%20the%20door.%20The%20police%20stepped%20forward,%20and%20she%20begged%20of%20them,%20to%20come%20inside.%20They%20did%20so,%20chatted%20for%20a%20short%20time,%20when%20the%20front%20window%20got%20three%20knocks,%20the%20police%20rushed%20to%20the%20door%20and%20no%20person%20was%20to%20be%20seen.%20They%20came%20in%20again%20and%20held%20talk,%20after%20a%20little%20while,%20the%20back%20window%20got%20three%20more%20knocks.%20All%20rushed%20out%20(much%20frightened),%20and%20no%20person%20could%20be%20found%20in%20the%20yard,%20which%20is%20well%20enclosed%20in%20such%20a%20way%20that%20no%20person%20could%20come%20and%20go%20without%20being%20observed.%20Cops%20Claim%20Locals%20are%20Reading%20Bad%20Books%20The%20police%20say%20some%20persons%20are%20reading%20bad%20books,%20like%20what%20was%20done%20in%20Cookstown,%20some%20ten%20or%20twelve%20years%20ago,%20when%20a%20man%20from%20Ballymena%20had%20to%20come%20to%20Cookstown%20to%20settle%20the%20ghost,%20which%20event%20should%20be%20fresh%20in%20the%20minds%20of%20the%20people%20about%20Oldtown%20Hill.%20Nothing%20more%20has%20been%20heard%20since%20Saturday%20night,%20and%20it%20is%20hoped%20the%20police%20have%20scared%20the%20ghost.%20The%20Bogie%20Man%20the%20following%20is%20a%20poem%20specially%20composed,%20by%20the%20local%20media%20that%20week,%20on%20the%20“Bogie”%20Man.%20The%20inhabitants%20of%20Moneymore%20have%20had%20a%20terrible%20fright,%20Because,%20of%20a%20dreadful%20Bogie%20man%20who%20walks%20about%20at%20night.%20I’m%20told%20he’s%20like%20a%20skeleton,%20his%20face%20is%20pale%20and%20wan,%20I%20shudder%20when%20I%20think%20upon%20this%20dreadful%20Bogie%20man.%20He%20appears%20in%20different%20aspects,%20sometimes%20he’s%20dressed%20in%20white,%20And%20he%20walks%20the%20Desertmartin%20road%20at%20seven%20o’clock%20at%20night.%20Come%20gather%20round%20ye%20citize https://api.whatsapp.com/send?text=*Glarryford%20Barefoot%20Thief%20Caught%20Red%20Handed*nGlarryford%20is%20some%20seven%20miles%20north%20of%20Ballymena. %20It%20was%20known%20to%20me%20(when%20I%20was%20growing%20up,%20in%20the%201970s%20and%20early%2080s)%20for%20two%20things%20–%20the%20famous%20Glarryford%20Young%20Farmers,%20and%20the%20great%20church%20parties%20that%20were%20held%20over%20there. %20It%20was%20some%2015%20miles%20from%20Eden.%20To%20get%20there,%20I%20would%20drive%20the%20seven%20miles%20to %20Kilrea,%20then%20out%20over%20the%20Bann%20bridge,%20up%20past%20McLaughlin’s%20Corner%20(close%20to%20where%20dad’s%20sister%20lived)%20and%20on,%20for%20another%208%20miles%20or%20so.%20On%20recently%20encountering%20an%20old%20local%20story%20in%20the%20newspapers%20of%20a%20bare-footed%20thief,%20from%20the%20late%201870s,%20I%20tallied%20it%20up%20with%20an%20upgraded%20old%20photo%20of%20Samuel%20Coleman’s%20shop%20at%20Glarryford. %20The%20shop%20photo%20is%20from%20the%20early%201900s.%20The%20story%20is%20about%20things%20going%20missing%20in%20the%20area,%20from%20the%20mid%201870s%20until%20late%201877. %20The%20thief%20would%20often%20take%20things%20and%20place%20them%20somewhere%20else.%20Admittedly,%20he%20did%20take%20nearly%20700%20items%20and%20hide%20them%20at%20his%20own%20residence.%20He%20also%20applied%20his%20trade%20to%20most%20of%20the%20local%20churches. %20I%20guess%20you%20could%20call%20him%20an%20ecumenical%20thief.%20 %20But%20the%20bit%20that%20stuck%20out%20was%20the%20sheer%20volume%20of%20his%20work,%20and%20the%20fact%20he%20would%20often%20leave%20a%20bare-footed%20print%20at%20many%20of%20the%20locations.%20Here’s%20the%20story%20from%20the%20Ballymena%20Observer,%20Saturday%2022%20September%201877.%20Singular%20Recovery%20of%20Stolen%20Goods%20at%20Glarryford%20During%20the%20last%20three%20years,%20this%20neighbourhood%20has%20become%20remarkable%20for%20the%20number%20of%20burglaries%20and%20petty%20thefts.%20Nearly%20every%20week%20last%20winter,%20there%20were%20two%20or%20three %20reported,%20but,%20although%20the%20constabulary%20were%20exerting%20themselves%20to%20the%20utmost,%20no%20discoveries%20were%20made.%20Several%20places%20were%20broken%20into,%20in%20the%20neighbourhood%20of%20Clough,%20and%20several%20articles%20stolen%20therefrom.%20Occasionally,%20the%20singular%20freak%20of%20stealing%20articles%20from%20one%20place,%20and%20bestowing%20them%20on%20another,%20was%20indulged%20in;%20as,%20for%20instance,%20a%20clock%20was%20stolen%20out%20of%20Laymore%20schoolhouse%20and%20left%20at%20the%20Craig%20school.%20A%20dairy%20at%20Ballyreagh%20was%20entered,%20and%20the%20works%20of%20a%20clock%20left,%20but%20nothing%20stolen%20therefrom.%20The%20Ahoghill%20Episcopal%20Church%20was%20entered,%20some%20surplices,%20and%20the%20cover%20of%20the%20communion%20table,%20with%20other%20things,%20were%20taken,%20and%20the%20next%20morning%20the%20table%20cover%20was%20discovered%20carefully%20arranged%20over%20a%20pig-house%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20town.%20These%20freaks%20looked%20more%20like%20the%20doings%20of%20the%20Cookstown%20ghost,%20than%20a%20rational%20thief.%20But%20this%20was%20not%20all.%20The%20Catholic%20chapel%20in%20Ballymena%20was%20broken%20into,%20and%20candlesticks%20and%20other%20things%20taken.%20The%20Third%20Presbyterian%20Church%20in%20Ahoghill,%20was%20ransacked,%20and%20about%20a%20fortnight%20ago,%20a%20blacksmith’s%20forge%20was%20entered,%20as%20was%20the%20Reverend%20Kirkpatrick’s%20harness-room%20at%20the%20Craigs,%20and%20Mr.%20J.%20Patrick’s,%20junior,%20Dunminning,%20about%20the%20same%20time.%20All%20these%20occurrences%20put%20the%20police%20doubly%20on%20the%20alert,%20and%20on%20Wednesday%20night%20last,%20Sub-Constables%20McAleer%20and%20McGivney,%20Cloughmills,%20were%20on%20patrol%20at%20a%20place%20called%20Dougry,%20and%20about%2011.30pm%20were%20lying%20in%20ambush%20on%20the%20road,%20when%20they%20saw%20a%20barefooted%20man%20just%20making%20away%20from%20near%20where%20they%20were.%20They%20immediately%20gave%20chase.%20McAleer%20throwing%20off%20his%20tunic%20for%20greater%20freedom%20of%20action,%20and%20after%20a%20run%20of%20half%20a%20mile%20he%20caught%20his%20man,%20very%20much%20exhausted.%20He%20had%20on%20a%20coat,%20since%20identified%20as%20of%20the%20Reverend%20Rentoul,%20underneath%20was%20a%20shawl%20the%20property%20of,%20John%20McTier%20of%20Cloughmills,%20while%20round%20his%20waist%20he%20had%20fastened%20a%20boxing%20brace%20and%20bit,%20together%20with%20a%20small%20piece%20of%20iron.%20He%20was%20then%20taken%20to%20the%20Cloughmills%20barracks%20and%20found%20to%20be%20a%20young%20man%20named%20Hugh%20Douglas,%20from%20Kildowney,%20where%20his%20mother%20holds%20a%20small%20farm%20of%20five%20acres.%20Constable%20Corkil%20then%20went%20to%20the%20house%20with%20three%20sub-constables,%20whom%20he%20placed%20in%20charge,%20and%20preceded%20to%20Mr%20Patrick’s,%20at%20Dunminning,%20to%20get%20a%20search%20warrant.%20He%20returned%20about%20630am,%20from%20which%20time%20to%2011am,%20he%20gathered%20up%20one%20of%20the%20greatest%20finds%20it%20has%20fallen%20to%20the%20lot%20of%20the%20Royal%20Irish%20Constabulary,%20to%20lay%20hands%20on,%20in%20this%20part%20of%20the%20country.%20A%20miscellaneous%20collection,%20comprising%20clergymen’s%20surplices,%20one%20of%20which%20was%20stuffed%20in%20a%20broken%20pane,%20candlesticks,%20catholic%20missal,%20bibles,%20catechisms,%20a%20great%20variety%20of%20tradesmen’s%20tools,%20school%20books%20and%20diagrams,%20driving%20whips,%20fishing%20rods%20and%20baskets,%20blacksmith’s%20apron,%20six%20pitchforks,%20four%20steel%20grapes,%20nine%20horse%20rugs,%20four%20handbaskets,%20a%20great%20number%20of%20fowls,%20eggs,%20etc.%20The%20treasure%20was%20conveyed%20in%20two%20cribbed%20carts%20to%20Cloughmills%20police%20barracks. %20The%20remainder%20of%20the%20party,%20consisting%20of%20the%20mother,%20Esther%20Douglas,%20daughter%20Esther,%20and%20two%20sons,%20George%20and%20Stewart,%20were%20placed%20under%20arrest,%20and%20conveyed%20to%20the%20barrack,%20whence%20they%20were%20removed%20to%20Ballymena%20bridewell,%20and%20after%20being%20brought%20in%20front%20of%20Mr.%20Montgomery,%20R.M.,%20were%20remanded%20til%20today%20(Saturday).%20The%20prisoners%20have%20all%20a%20simple,%20idiotic%20expression,%20and%20have%20been%20looked%20on%20by%20their%20neighbours%20as%20‘odd,’%20but%20the%20slightest%20suspicion%20was%20never%20attached%20to%20them.%20It%20has%20been%20remarked%20that%20in%20the%20vicinity%20where%20the%20robberies%20were%20committed,%20the%20mark%20of%20a%20large%20bare%20foot%20was%20generally%20observed.%20 %20As%20well%20as%20the%20story%20making%20the%20local%20newspapers,%20at%20the%20time,%20it%20also%20attracted%20some%20interest%20in%20the%20southern%20media.%20Special%20Court%20in%20Ballymena%20Nine%20days%20later,%20on%20Monday%201st%20October%201877,%20a%20special%20court%20of%20Petty%20Sessions%20was%20held%20in%20Ballymena. %20The%20presiding%20magistrate,%20Mr.%20Montgomery,%20R.M.,%20oversaw%20proceedings. %20The%20four%20prisoners,%20namely%20the%20Douglas%20family,%20belonging%20to%20Kildowney,%20were%20brought%20up%20on%20remand.%20They%20were%20charged%20with%20having%20in%20their%20possession,%20at%20their%20home%20in%20Kildowney,%20on%20the%20night%20of%20the%2019th%20September,%201877,%20some%20691%20miscellaneous%20articles,%20and%20of%20knowing%20the%20same%20to%20have%20been%20stolen.%20The%20legalities%20having%20been%20completed,%20the%20wigged%20magistrate,%20in%20all%20his%20pomp,%20suggested%20that%20the%20mother,%20Esther%20Douglas,%20and%20Hugh%20Douglas,%20might%20be%20sent%20for%20trial%20at%20the%20forthcoming%20Quarter%20Sessions%20Court%20in%20Ballymena.%20The%20other%20family%20members,%20namely%20George,%20Stewart%20and%20Esther%20(junior),%20were%20free%20to%20go%20home.%20The%20Kildowney%20Barefoot%20Goes%20Down%20By%20the%20end%20of%20October%201877,%20Hugh%20Douglas,%20the%20Kildowney%20Barefoot,%20was%20back%20in%20court. %20The%20young%20man,%20who%20was%20the%20talk%20of%20the%20local%20area,%20was%20in%20court%20in%20connection%20with%20a%20number%20of%20thefts%20committed%20in%20various%20locations%20during%20the%20previous%20two%20years.%20Hugh%20pleaded%20guilty%20to%20several%20indictments%20charging%20him%20with%20having,%20on%20the%201st%20October%201877,%20stolen%20a%20coat,%20which%20was%20the%20property%20of%20Thomas%20Pyper,%20and%20also%20stealing%20a%20shawl%20on%20the%2018th%20September%201877,%20belonging%20to%20James%20McTier.%20The%20leader%20of%20the%20proceedings%20summed%20up%20the%20case,%20by%20concluding%20that%20the%20prisoner’s%20case%20was%20a%20very%20extraordinary%20one.%20The%20lad%20had%20pleaded%20guilty%20to%20two%20robberies.%20These%20robberies%20were%20committed%20over%20an%20extended%20period%20of%20time.%20 %20It%20appeared%20that%20the%20prisoner%20had%20not%20robbed%20for%20money,%20nor%20for%20gain,%20but%20for%20the%20simple%20purpose%20of%20taking%20other%20people’s%20property.%20His%20crimes%20had%20to%20be%20punished%20of%20course,%20but%20in%20considering%20all%20the%20circumstances%20of%20the%20case,%20judge%20and%20jury%20agreed%20that%20justice%20would%20be%20satisfied%20by%20sentencing%20young%20Douglas%20to%20six%20months%20imprisonment.%20The%20entire%20circumstances%20were%20not%20clear. %20Given%20the%20hundreds%20of%20items%20stolen,%20he%20seems%20to%20have%20got%20off%20very%20lighty.%20The%20Mother%20–%20Esther%20Douglas%20Esther%20Douglas,%20an%20old%20woman%20over%20sixty%20years%20age,%20and%20mother%20of%20the%20thief,%20was%20then%20brought%20forward%20to%20face%20the%20same%20court,%20and%20to%20answer%20four%20different%20indictments.%20She%20was%20charged%20with%20stealing,%20and%20knowingly%20having%20in%20her%20possession,%20the%20following%20articles:%20–%20two%20waterproof%20covers,%20one%20horse%20rug,%20two%20whips,%20and%20a%20small%20padlock%20and%20key,%20belonging%20to%20the%20Reverend%20Alexander%20Thomas%20Kirkpatrick,%20from%20the%20Craigs%20in%20Cullybackey;%20–%20one%20missal%20and%20two%20charts,%20the%20property%20of%20the%20Reverend%20Father%20Lynch,%20and%20stolen%20from%20the%20parish%20priest%20in%20Ballymena;%20–%20two%20candlesticks,%20one%20altar%20stone,%20three%20charts,%20one%20crucifix,%20and%20an%20altar%20cloth,%20the%20property%20of%20the%20Reverend%20Father%20Stewart,%20stolen%20from%20the%20parish%20church%20in%20Cullybackey;%20–%20two%20white%20communion%20table%20cloths%20and%20one%20crimson%20table%20cloth,%20stolen%20from%20the%20church%20at%20the%20Craigs%20in%20Cullybackey;%20and%20–%20one%20table%20cloth,%20one%20napkin,%20and%20two%20hymn-books,%20stolen%20from%20the%20Ahoghill%20Episcopal%20Church.%20Esther%20pleaded%20not%20guilty,%20and%20thus%20a%20jury%20was%20to%20decide%20her%20fate.%20Mr.%20McLean,%20S.C.S.,%20prosecuted%20on%20behalf%20the%20Crown%20in%20this%20and%20the%20other%20criminal%20cases.%20Mr.%20Alexander%20O’Rorke%20represented%20the%20prisoner.%20The%20articles%20mentioned%20in%20the%20indictment%20(see%20above)%20were%20stolen%20in%20the%20previous%20twelve%20months.%20The%20jury%20was%20told%20that%20it%20took%20the%20local%20constabulary%20considerable%20time%20to%20find%20the%20person%20responsible%20for%20the%20thefts.%20But%20by%20the%20the%2019th%20September,%20they%20had%20evidence,%20and%20after%20deploying%20a%20number%20of%20police,%20under%20the%20charge%20of%20Constable%20John%20Crorkin,%20made%20their%20way%20to%20the%20prisoner’s%20house%20at%20Kildowney.%20On%20searching%20the%20said%20house,%20several%20articles%20mentioned%20in%20the%20indictment,%20along%20with%20a%20quantity%20of%20other%20items,%20were%20discovered.%20Most%20of%20the%20things%20were%20stored%20away%20in%20a%20loft.%20The%20prisoner%20and%20the%20other%20members%20of%20the%20family%20—%20all%20in%20all%20five%20people,%20were%20arrested.%20The%20five%20were%20all%20duly%20cautioned. %20The%20jury%20was%20told%20that%20on%20arrival%20at%20the%20barracks,%20Esther%20Douglas%20asked%20Constable%20John%20Crorkin%20to%20do%20all%20that%20he%20could%20for%20her.%20She%20went%20on%20to%20tell%20him%20that%20she%20had%20tried,%20without%20success,%20to%20prevent%20the%20stolen%20items%20from%20coming%20into%20her%20house.%20The%20Reverend%20Kirkpatrick%20was%20then%20called%20to%20the%20witness%20stand. %20He%20said%20that%20the%20waterproof%20covers,%20the%20whips,%20the%20horse-rugs,%20and%20the%20padlock%20and%20key,%20were%20taken%20out%20of%20his%20coachhouse%20after%20dark.%20The%20premises,%20he%20went%20on%20to%20say,%20were%20forcibly%20broken%20into.%20It%20was%20established%20that%20the%20two%20white%20communion%20cloths,%20and%20the%20crimson%20cloth,%20were%20stolen%20from%20the%20church%20during%20the%20night,%20about%20twelve%20months%20previously. %20It%20was%20also%20found%20that%20items%20were%20stolen%20from%20Cullybackey%20Catholic%20Chapel,%20Ballymena%20Chapel,%20and%20Ahoghill%20Episcopal%20Church,%20at%20the%20same%20time.%20The%20items%20taken%20were%20subsequently%20identified%20by%20the%20clergymen%20and%20caretakers%20of%20the%20various%20churches.%20Mr.%20O’Rorke,%20in%20his%20address%20to%20the%20jury,%20felt%20that%20he%20was%20sure%20that,%20on%20hearing%20all%20the%20‘real’%20facts%20of%20the%20case,%20they%20would%20acquit%20Esther%20Douglas%20of%20all%20the%20charges.%20Esther’s%20son,%20he%20argued,%20was%20the%20person%20who%20had%20committed%20all%20the%20larcenies,%20and%20had%20already%20admitted%20doing%20so. %20Her%20son,%20Hugh,%20was%20somewhat%20“weak%20in%20his%20mind”%20and%20took%20no%20heed%20of%20the%20advice%20given%20by%20his%20mother%20and%20brothers. %20Hugh%20would%20stay%20out%20at%20night,%20and%20would%20bring%20items%20home,%20in%20the%20early%20hours,%20concealing%20many%20of%20them%20in%20the%20loft.%20The%20prisoner%20would%20see%20the%20articles%20coming%20in,%20and%20she%20spoke%20to%20her%20son%20about%20them,%20but%20he%20disregarded%20her.%20She%20was%20unaware%20of%20where%20they%20came%20from. %20Local%20witnesses%20corroborated%20her%20statement.%20Subsequently,%20several%20residents%20in%20the%20neighbourhood%20gave%20evidence%20regarding%20the%20good%20character%20of%20Esther,%20and%20of%20her%20anxiety%20and%20efforts%20to%20bring%20up%20her%20family%20to%20be%20respectful,%20decenct%20and%20honest.%20The%20jury%20returned%20a%20verdict%20of%20not%20guilty%20on%20all%20the%20counts,%20and%20Esther%20was%20freed.%20–%20Full%20story%20compiled%20from%20local%20newspapers%20of%20the%20time.%20An%20Update%20–%20More%20Kittens%20On%20a%20totally%20different%20topic. %20I%20have%20added%20to%20the%20kitten%20family. %20My%20kitten%20(Angel%20is%20now%20her%20name)%20it%20turns%20out%20was%20a%20mother. %20I%20have%20now%20adopted%20her%20three%20daughters. %20All%20four%20are%20a%20delight. %20Here
