Hrčak is the official digital portal of Croatian scientific and professional journals, created for centralized access to publications that provide open access to the full text of their articles or at least minimal bibliographic data and annotations.

The Hrčak website is a key tool in the system of scientific and academic communication in Croatia. It unites more than 559 journalsthat have published more than 311,885 full text articlesand have registered more than 96,472 ORCID identifiers. This makes the portal one of the most significant resources for researchers, teachers, students and specialists in various fields of knowledge.

Main functions and capabilities of the portal

  • Centralized access: All Croatian scientific and professional journals with open access are concentrated on one site.
  • Search and navigation: Ability to search alphabetically, by field of knowledge, by publisher, as well as improved search with support for complex queries.
  • Updates and News: Latest news is published regularly, including new features, tutorials and events.
  • Support for authors and editors: The portal provides detailed guidance for authors, editors and publishers, including publication rules, journal inclusion criteria, instructions for uploading articles and use of ORCID.

New technologies: automatic generation of JATS XML

In September 2023, Hrčak introduced a new advanced feature - automatic generation of JATS XML files from Word documents (DOCX). This feature is based on two powerful tools:

  • Pandoc - universal document converter;
  • AnyStyle is a machine learning-based system capable of recognizing and structuring bibliographic references.

This greatly simplifies the process of preparing scientific articles for publication in digital format, increasing the quality and standardization of data. To support users, webinars were organized, video instructions and materials were published in a digital repository. In addition, Hrčak regularly conducts online consultations and live master classes for magazine editors.
