Girls Who Code: How the Tech Industry is Changing

Did you know that the gender equality gap in IT is only getting wider? This is true, and this is the problem that Girls Who Code is fighting against. On their home page you can see an important statistic: the organization has already helped 760 thousand girls, women and non-binary people learn to code. That's an impressive number, right? But the main thing is not even the quantity, but the result. Graduates of the program are 5 times more likely to enroll in computer science degrees than the national average student.

The site offers several ways to participate. There are clubs for schoolchildren from grades 3 to 12. The plans are ambitious - to double the coverage of the program for primary school (grades 3-5) to 200 thousand students. And for high school students, a separate Pathways track has been created. There the focus shifts to advanced technologies. The guys are studying artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and other emerging technologies. The goal is to break down barriers and ensure that young people are at the forefront of progress.

Artificial intelligence and new courses

Particular attention is paid to AI. In 2024, more than 8 thousand students passed through summer programs. A special curriculum on artificial intelligence has been developed that will cover over 200 thousand students in the United States. Two new courses on AI and a course on data science have been launched. Interestingly, they teach how to use AI not only for code, but also for solving real problems: climate change, financial literacy, and even music creation. It sounds like magic, but it's pure code.

There is also a gaming project called Girls Who Code Girls. This is an experience where users can program characters that reflect themselves and the diversity of their communities. You can change the body type, skin color, facial features, hairstyles, clothes and even the personality of the hero. It helps you understand yourself better through programming.

Community and Support

The organization already has 330,000 alumni who are either in college or have already graduated. Many of them become leaders and role models for others. For example, Gloria Salas, a Summer Program and College Loops participant, says Girls Who Code inspired her to follow her own path and help other girls from underrepresented groups in STEM.
