The main question of many Muscovites and those who regularly travel through the capital is how to get from one district to another faster and more conveniently now? The answer is right under the wheels - Moscow Speed Diameter or MSD. This is a unique intra-city highway with a length of almost 70 kilometers. Yes, you heard right - 68 km in the center of Moscow, north to south, from the federal highway M-11 Neva to M-2 Crimea, with access to the new highway M-12 East. A straight road, no intersections, no traffic lights, where you can just drive without thinking.
MSD is not just a route. This is a whole system that was created in order to relieve the congestion of the city rings: the Garden Ring, the Third Transport Ring, the Moscow Ring Road. Plus - 40 bridges, tunnels and overpasses that allow you to pass through cities and regions without stopping. There are also 34 pedestrian crossings. These are the details that make life more comfortable.
However, the most important thing is time. In 40 minutes you can cover the entire route, which means you spend less time on the road and more time on family, vacation or work. And yes, it really works. Already after the launch of the main section, which opened in September 2022, the number of cars in traffic jams has noticeably decreased. Especially on the north-eastern directions of the Moscow Ring Road - the load has decreased by 13. An important indicator.
But what’s interesting is that the rules have changed. From February 15, 2025, only traffic during critically busy hours will be charged: from 7 to 11 and from 16 to 20. The rest of the time is free. And the price for each plot? 7 rubles. But! Only if you entered and left the highway at these hours. Example: arrived at 6:55, left at 7:30 - still free travel. This is important to understand so as not to overpay.
Who has the right to ride for free? Operational services, municipal equipment, urban transport, school buses - all of them can use the MSD without paying. And the ambulance now travels 20 times faster in surrounding areas. Why? Because it can move unhindered, even during rush hour. Great, isn't it?
Moscow is growing. People are moving, cars are getting bigger. We need to somehow manage the flows. The MSD helps - it connects ten major outbound routes. The regions of Moscow and the Moscow region have become better connected with each other. More than 4.5 million people live in the area affected by this route. It is important not only for residents, but also for Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo airports, as well as for the Eastern Station. Roads now work more efficiently.
And yes, the environment is also improving. By reducing traffic jams, emissions of harmful substances decreased by 20. The noise became less. Every day is a step towards a cleaner city. And no one should feel deceived: free travel remains available on other routes. There are alternatives. For example, the Central Ring Road is a federal project that was built at the expense of the Russian Federation budget. So transit cars don’t get stuck in traffic jams near Moscow.
It starts from the SBV (Solntsevo-Butovo-Vidnoe) highway, ends on the M-11 Neva highway with a branch to M-12 East. That is, you can get from one region directly to another without unnecessary turns. It's like an inland railway, only for cars.
Of course! All other times, except 711 and 1620 hours, travel is free, even on weekends and holidays. The main thing is not to enter or leave during paid hours.
After June 1, 2025, the fee is 7 rubles for each section traveled, but only if you entered and left during critically busy hours.
Yes, absolutely. Ambulances can travel along the highway free of charge and unhindered, especially in surrounding areas. This speeds up the response.
The southern section was completed in September 2023 - from the Entuziastov Highway to the Moscow Ring Road. It is now fully operational and connected to the main route.
By reducing traffic jams, the number of cars standing still has decreased. As a result, emissions of harmful substances decreased by 20, and the noise level also became lower. This really affects the quality of life.
So yes, everything works. There is no need to be afraid of new rules, no need to worry about the road through Moscow. Just follow the instructions, check entry and exit times - and your ride will be fast, safe and comfortable. The main thing is to remember to look at the bridges, tunnels, and overpasses. They are not just beautiful, they are part of the future of Moscow.
